Another December, another Summary of Art meme.
Time flies when your busy working on stuff!
It was an eventful year and I made some nice progress compared to previous years, once again!
The stuff I made is a bit more diverse than just a bunch of drawings too. Lets run through the highlights per month!
(Which will also include links to the posts of these projects)
My first decent experience with 3D printing, the Noxine prop!
By this time I had already run quite a lot of tests on the 3D printer at school, an Ultimaker2 and I kinda knew what to take into account. Since these tests resulted in me making a lot of static figures, I wanted to try something new and create something interactive, resulting in this fun mini project.
Wanting to go one step beyond the Wakfu based prop I made in January, I wanted to make my own Transformer, Bitzone.
However, this was also around the time the printer at school got busted and my other big school project started, so the poor guy never got beyond these concepts.. Maybe in the future big buddy!
Staying in the 3D printing theme, my 3D printed Steampunk arm pendant!
During this month I was preoccupied with the aforementioned school project, which was running slowly, and I was working on a new cosplay project. Since the previous costume always included a big mechanical arm, which I wore for at least 5 years straight to conventions, I wanted to commemorate this “loyal friend” by keeping it close with me, near my heart. The real thing now hangs in my room, because it would fall apart if it would see another convention..
And this is the month I am proudest of! The month I finished Noximilien the Watchmaker!
It was my first real Worbla project and the first cosplay since 2009, so it was pretty thrilling to finish it and to wear it to the Elf Fantasy Fair in Holland.
Naturally I want to keep improving it, because there are many variations in Nox`s costume. Just recently I installed LED lights in the chest and eyes, which is only the beginning!
Just as we, the people in my cosplay group, finished our franchise based costumes, we started planning our OC costumes. A project I call the Dragonic’s.
One of the ladies wanted to make a dragon priestess costume and the rest of us wanted some sort of group outfit, so I think we`ll all end up like some ragtag bunch of Adventurers once the outfits are done, somewhere in April 2016
Should be fun!
With the end of the big school project I had to draw something for myself. The Dragonic project was on my mind, so I grabbed my then-favorite design and put it in a setting.
I was in quite a slum, because the project didn’t go well at all. It all ended in a barely passable grade and a slight fallout with my teammates. Looking back at my archive, I can see that the whole project was an artistic slum that was hard to break out of. Not an art block per sé, more of an apathy towards drawing. Luckily, there were other things too to occupy my creative urges.
Level 5 Kaiju Alert was this thing to occupy my mind. I had my Arduino set since December, but I never had any grand plans for it. However, when brainstorming for our next school project pitch, the Big Team Project for the graduation year, I came up with L5KA. A two player local game with one person sitting in a Virtual mech, using a VR headset and a co-pilot using a custom control panel to help the pilot out. It was awesome to combine Arduino, Unity, laser cutting, chicken fence and an old monitor to make all the components. I only really lost my steam once it came to making the actual game, since that wouldn’t require me tinkering away. So for now the project is fridged. I still have all components, naturally, but it is just waiting for a team of at least 1 Artist and 1 Programmer to make it a reality.
After the summer vacation, I took another close look at the design for the Dragonic project.
The blue/green Lance and Shield wielding knight felt clunky and “Eh..” to me after a time of long consideration. I liked the hood and the horns, and the shoulder thing, but it just felt too gloomy and dark. So I picked up my tablet and started working on a more “magic based class”, which turned out to be this Dragonic Wizard!
This is the month I launched my YouTube channel!
I have been trying to make videos about my projects and stuff on a regular basis since then, but I`m kinda unsure how to promote them on Tumblr, haha!
(Psst if you want to see more about my costumes, props or Dutch event related stuff, check it out; www.youtube.com/channel/UCcTbj…
I just need to figure out when I can get an official channel name in my URL)
I have played quite a bit of Wildstar in September/October 2015 and I love the designs for the robots, mechs and droids. So naturally I had to draw my Mechari, Brastin Gigatron.
I kinda want to make more Wildstar based stuff because of the great designs, but I`m unsure if I can even find the time between my other projects!
I cheated a bit on this one, because this brightly colored Adult Susan was actually made in early December.
November was a month full of recording and editing videos and working on the Big Group Project, because I had Deadlines all over the place!
For some reason I thought it was reasonable for me to make at least 2 YouTube videos every week, even with all the other stuff I had going on.
Because a channel without content is not a channel to watch. So in the end I allowed myself little time to draw
And here we are, back with Richard South in his “cool pose”.
While I was showing my old art to a friend of mine, I noticed that it was 3 years since I last did a redrawing of this drawing, which was a redrawing of a drawing I drew 3 years prior. So I promised myself to draw it again in December to top off the year on a good note!
I cant wait to see what I`ll make in 2016!
